Ode to my Gracie Girl 5/21/2009 - 9/16/2024

I remember the day that I met you,

You made my heart so light,

I absolutely knew right then,

My life with you was right.

The way you fit within my arms,

The softness of your touch,

Quickly made me say to you,

I love you oh so much.

Our time together had just begun,

Our days now filled with peace and fun,

You loved your walks and playing in snow,

And barked at animals while watching a show.

You loved to look pretty,

With your big, purple bow,

Greeting each person,

As a friend that you know.

Here by my side is where you’d be,

I could feel you look at me,

The love I felt from your big, brown eyes,

Made me feel like your grand prize.

Towards the end of your life,

You started to stumble,

You no longer barked,

And your days became bumbled.

I’d carry you around with me,

Your head tucked under mine,

I’d always reassure you,

That everything was fine.

It was hard to let you go that day,

You looked better than you did,

But you deserved a special end,

For the beautiful life you lived.

A day filled with moments of sheer, utter bliss,

like eating more bacon than you knew had exist,

Devouring watermelon and a fun ice cream treat,

Your last day on earth was a day you can’t beat.

Papa picked you flowers,

Purple ones of course,

And placed them gently near you,

As we felt our voice lose force.

With a full, and happy tummy,

And a sticky, little face,

I rocked you very gently,

In our very favorite place.

Underneath the two big trees,

Where we often sat,

The place we watched the sunset,

And we talked of this and that.

It’s time to go my dear brave friend,

To a place where you’ll run free,

You’ll meet my sweet boy Teddy,

Who is also dear to me.

I sense him more than ever,

I keep thinking of his name,

I know he’s here to comfort me,

Because he knows my pain.

He’ll show you how to see me,

Everywhere I go,

And I will feel you watching me,

With your pretty, purple glow.

Thank you for the gift you sent,

The following day you died,

One little, purple flower bloomed,

In a bed that did not thrive.
